Chapter 19

“Did Rebecca say anything more about the break-in when you saw her?” Maggie sat beside Lucy in the Jeep as they drove down Route 1A toward the village of Ipswich and Crane’s Beach.

“She didn’t want to talk about it in front of Sophie. But she let me know in Mom-speak that she managed to clean up in between getting Leo home and talking to the police.”

“She’s super woman, that one.” Maggie’s tone was admiring and not at all ironic.

“She didn’t want Sophie to have any idea of what had happened. It’s enough that the little girl just lost her father. Leo has a bump and a horrible headache, but nothing worse. Rebecca was relieved that his blood pressure and other vitals were fine, too.”

“He’s lucky. Sounds as if it could have been a lot worse. Did he get a look at the person who attacked him?” Maggie asked.

“They came up behind him and covered his eyes while he was unconscious. He didn’t see a thing until Rebecca found him.”

“That sounds terrifying. I guess there’s no alarm system or security cameras?” Maggie asked.

“None of that. It’s a rental. The owner claims the neighborhood is safe. He’s never had a problem. He’ll have an alarm installed but wouldn’t go for security cameras. Too expensive, he said. But Nick Russo insisted that Rebecca needed them and he ordered a few. Rebecca doesn’t have a clue about those things and neither does Leo, but Nick is good with high tech gadgets, and he will set them up for her. The police promised to keep an eye on the house, too.”

“As in stationing a car outside to protect them?”

“I don’t think they’ll go that far. Just some extra drive-by patrols. Though, they might have been watching Rebecca since Colin died and watching the house to see who was coming and going.”

“Too bad they weren’t snooping this morning.” Maggie had taken out a tube of sunblock and smeared some on her arms and face. The sun was so low, Lucy doubted it could do much damage, but she admired Maggie’s vigilance.

“Ironic, isn’t it?”

Maggie paused with her smearing. “Perhaps. Or, someone was watching the house, and knew when Rebecca was out and when the police patrol wasn’t nearby.”

“I thought of that, too. I guess they didn’t expect to find her father there. All this stress can’t be good for him. He has a weak heart. Rebecca says there’s no cure short of a transplant and he’s not a candidate. He can’t stop smoking, either,” she added.

“Rebecca mentioned his heart problem to me. But I didn’t know it was that serious.”

Maggie slipped her sunglasses on and fluffed her hair with her fingers. “I hate to be pessimistic, but I doubt the police will catch the intruder.”

“They said they’re going door to door to ask the neighbors for information, but I also doubt they’ll find the creep who did it. I think it’s more important to figure out what they were looking for.”

They had come to the village of Ipswich and drove past the village green and over a small stone bridge.
